Here is where Shakespeare's story begins: Stratford-upon-Avon

Updated: Aug 30, 2023

Stratford-upon-Avon, England's historical town, is home to Shakespeare, the master of English literature. He was born here, lived here, and died here. Houses he lived in, books he read, works he wrote, documents, clothes he wore are all on display as a museum. My visit here gave me a lot of info that I'd like to share with you. Make sure you put this place on your must-see list!

1. Shakespeare's Birthplace

Here's Shakespeare's childhood home in Stratford-upon-Avon. Here you can hear about the world-famous author's family life and see his unique collections. Here I learned how rich his family was, how he went to the most prestigious schools due to his father's status, and that he had seven siblings.

2. His wife's house - Anne Hathaway's Cottage

You feel like you're in a fairy tale as soon as you walk in... There's a dream house and a garden like a wonderland.Shakespeare's wife, Anne Hathaway, was born and raised here, and they spent a lot of time together before they got married. It couldn't be a more romantic place to start a love story!

3. Where He Spent His Last Years - Shakespeare's New Place

Shakespeare died in this house in 1616, which is the biggest in town. During the 19 years he lived in this house, he wrote most of his works. I felt different feelings with every step I took as I walked around the garden, thinking that he was doing the same thing 400 years ago. I love every single piece of art and sculpture in the garden!

Museum Entrance Information

They're all in Stratford-upon-Avon, about two hours from the City of London. You can walk to Birth Place from New Place, but you have to drive 10 minutes to Anne Hathaway Cottage, or you can walk half an hour. It's for that reason I recommend you go by car. Here's the address:

You can park in the center of town. Anne Hathaway Cottage also has a parking lot.

Getting there without a car? Take the train or bus.

You have to buy your e-ticket in advance. You can get into these three places for 24 pounds until 30 October. (It's called Shakespeare's Story Ticket.) If you're coming after October 30, you'll have to wait until 2023.
