London Free Activities - No:1 - Visit The Barbican Centre

Updated: Aug 30, 2023

There's no doubt that London is one of the most expensive cities in the world. Luckily, there are a lot of free things to do and places to see in this expensive city!

Here's what's free in London: The Barbican Centre. There are concerts, plays, and exhibitions here. It's one of the biggest performing arts centers in Europe. Besides that, there's a library, an art gallery, a shopping mall, restaurants, and a unique conservatory. Let me tell you a little about the Barbican before I get to the conservatory.

"Barbecana" means gate in Latin, so the Barbican is named after that. Barbican Residences began construction in 1965 and took 11 years to complete. In 2001, the complex was listed under Grade II, second degree protection, under the Listed Buildings system. In the UK, listing highlights the building's architectural and historical value while also incorporating it into a special planning system to preserve it. It's not allowed to do random renovations or restorations in these buildings even if you own them. Even driving a nail might require permission.

Barbican: Brütalist Mimari

Barbican Centre: The best example of brutalist architecture in London.

A decade in the making, the Barbican Center was opened in 1982, and is now considered one of the most importantarchitectural achievements of the 20th century. This place is unique because of its brutalist architecture. Brutalism comes from the French word brut. The complex's raw concrete, repetitive windows, and floor forms catch your eye. People either love or hate this type of architecture. It's definitely one of my favorites. I'm always impressed by the buildings when I visit.

Barbican Conservatory: Among the concrete, a tropical forest

There are some movies where there's a disaster, the buildings are empty, the roads are deserted, and life has stopped. Slowly, nature starts to come back. Plants emerge from the concrete, and life returns. It's like you're in a movie when you're in the Conservatory.

BThis is London's second biggest greenhouse and a tropical paradise! The garden is free, but you need to buy tickets online in advance. You can buy tickets online at 10:00 a.m. on Thursdays a week in advance. Check out the website if you're planning to come.
