It's Legal to Graffiti Here: Leake Street Tunnel

Updated: Aug 30, 2023

Since 2008, London's largest legal wall is the 300-metre graffiti tunnel on Leake Street.

It's no secret that London has a rich street art history - Shoreditch, Camden, Brixton, Walthamstow, and most recently Croydon have all made their mark with new additions every day.

What's so special about this tunnel?

Everything changed when Banksy (yes, Banksy!) decided to hold a street art festival in the tunnel called Cans Festival. He invited the biggest and brightest names in street art to make pieces for the tunnel. That's all! The dingy, damp Leake Street was transformed into a vibrant, cool place where artists displayed their work.

From then on, the Leake Street graffiti tunnel has been a symbol of London's street art scene. The fact that this is a legal wall lets artists work in peace. Artists add new work to this tunnel all the time because it's a living place. Every time you go, you'll see something different.

How do I get to Leake Street Tunnel?

Waterloo Station is just a five-minute walk away from the tunnel. Even though there are lots of restaurants, pubs and cafes around, I recommend coming to the tunnel before it's too late for security reasons.
